Filipino World War II veterans fought under U.S. command—and then spent decades fighting for benefits that Congress deliberately denied after the war. Drawing on archival research in the Daniel K. Inouye Papers at Hamilton Library, this talk demonstrates how excluding Filipino veterans from the GI Bill enabled the United States to distance itself from its colonial past in the Philippines. It also introduces recent research on the longer institutional legacy of the U.S. Veterans Administration in the Philippines, tracing how veterans’ benefits and health care became enduring yet incomplete legacies of empire.

About the speaker: Colin Moore is a political scientist and Associate Professor in the College of Social Sciences at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa, where he serves as Director of the Matsunaga Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution and as a faculty member at UHERO.
